FAQS

All Your Frequently Asked Questions

A: This is Eric's signature service that is performed on your hair while it is dry and in its natural curly state. Your curls are cut curl by curl, as they naturally live. This is done because not all curls are equal. If you cut your curls like straight hair, the tighter curls will end up being shorter than their neighboring looser curls, lending to a shapeless and unbalanced result.

Q: What is a Curl Sculpting Cut?

A: Your Curl Sculpting Cut will begin with a one-on-one consultation, followed by Eric's signature Curl Sculpting Cut that is performed on your hair while it is dry. Then, if necessary, a detox treatment will be performed on your hair, followed by a coaching session on how to properly use the appropriate products that are specific to your curl type. At the end, you'll receive a step-by-step printout of how to recreate your look at home, with the option of purchasing the products that were used.

Q: What does a Curl Sculpting Cut include?

A: Eric has done extensive training with numerous, premier curly hair experts, most of which have been featured in major magazines and are stylists to many celebrities. He takes the knowledge from each of these stylists and incorporates it into a personalized service that is tailored for your specific curl type. This includes the knowledge from DevaCuts, as well as other techniques. However, if you prefer that the exact technique of only a DevaCut be implemented for your visit, that request can be accommodated by simply mentioning it at your visit.

Q: Is Eric's Signature Curl Sculpting Cut the same as a DevaCut?

A: When products containing large amounts of oils and/or butters are used on your hair, buildup occurs, thus blocking your hair and scalp from receiving true hydration. (Oils repel water and do not mix.) By detoxing the hair, those moisture-blocking barriers are removed, and your hair can receive the hydration that it truly needs.

Q: What is a detox treatment?

A: In most cases, from start to finish is about 2 hours, give or take.

Q: How long does a Curl Sculpting Cut take?

A: ABSOLUTELY! You will notice a difference in shape and hydration immediately. Your curls will be much more defined and shiny. While hydration to your curls is a cumulative process, if you continue to use the recommended products at home, your curls will become more and more defined, with less and less work.

Q: Will I notice a difference right away?

A: Because your hair will be sculpted according to your natural curl pattern, it is very important that you arrive with your hair clean, COMPLETELY dry AND detangled, in its natural curly state. Your hair needs to be hanging loosely and not pulled back in any way. Do not use any clips, ponytails, headbands, etc. Using products in your hair is fine, but please don't use any heavy oils or butters, as these only coat your curls. For hair that isn't completely dry, a $25 fee will apply to cover the time that is needed to dry your hair. If it is a situation where it would take more than 15 minutes to dry, your appointment would need to be rescheduled, and a cancellation fee equaling the total of your service will apply. If your hair is excessively tangled, a $25 detangling fee will apply.

Q: How should I wear my hair to my visit?

A: Eric recommends using water soluble products, without sulfates, silicones or parabens, at a minimum. These products will not build up in the hair, or suffocate the hair and/or scalp, which can lead to hair loss. They are also generally molecularly small enough to fit into the cuticle layer of your hair to properly hydrate your curls.

Q: What products should I be using?

A: In this case, you would need to see another stylist because that is not a service that is offered. It would be doing a disservice to you. It would give no better results than any other haircut you may have had in the past.

Q: What if I wear my hair curly, but want it to be cut like a regular, straight haircut?

A: No. The salon carries products from several lines. The products are first scrutinized to make sure that the ingredients are curly hair friendly, then they are used in the salon to make sure they are effective. The salon does not carry a full line of any one single product company for this reason. Also, no single product line has all of the products to cover such a wide range of the many textures of curls that the curly hair population has.

Q: Does your salon use one product line exclusively for curly hair?

A: Due to the studio being a small, intimate setting, you are kindly asked not to bring any guests to your appointment. Any guests that accompany you to your appointment will be asked to wait outside or to return once your visit is finished.

For any parents, please arrange for childcare prior to your appointment, unless your child is the guest receiving services. We absolutely love children, but the salon is not a safe space for them due to the many sharp objects, hot tools and other hazards to little ones. Should you arrive with your child to your visit, you will be asked to reschedule and a cancellation fee equal to the total amount of services scheduled will apply. The studio nor Sola are responsible for any injury your child may cause themselves.

Q: Can I bring a guest with me to my appointment?

A: If you've been in the salon in the past year, and had your Curl Sculpting Cut for New Guests, you would be the perfect candidate for the Curl Sculpting Express Cut. This 30-minute appointment is the exact service as the Curl Sculpting Cut, except without the cleanse, condition and style. You would need to come in with your hair freshly styled as you would normally come for a Curl Sculpting Cut, and once the cut is complete, a curl refresher would be used on your hair to reactivate the curl products.

Q: What if I want to come in for a Curl Sculpting Cut, but don't have two hours to be in the salon, or I can't get an appointment right away?

A: Please make sure that your child is of age where he / she will be able to calmly stay through a visit that will take about two hours. For complete details and full policies on this please visit the Salon Policies page.

Q: Do you cut kids' hair?

A: Yes! Everything ranging from clear shines to grey coverage to Pintura (Curl-by-Curl) to RëZo highlights can be done at Eric Kelley Salon. The only exception is that vivids are not offered. Vivids are pinks, greens, rainbow, etc. For those services, Eric refers guests to Lindsay Racca (IG: @beyond_vivids) at Vivid Studio in Baton Rouge, LA.

Q: Do you only do haircuts, or do you do color as well?

A: All appointments are scheduled online. Usually Eric is booked about 3-4 months in advance. You can see Eric's schedule and book here by clicking the "Book Now" button. If you need a sooner appointment, you can follow his Instagram account @hairbyerickelley and watch for when a story is posted showing last-minute availability.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR AVAILABILITY?

A: Yes! You can follow Eric's Instagram, @hairbyerickelley, and take a peek at some of his work there.

Q: Do you have a portfolio or social media account?

A: Your appointment is greatly valued. Eric wants to ensure that you leave with as much information and education about you curls as possible, so a significant segment of time is reserved for your visit. Should you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, a 48-hour notice by TEXT or VOICEMAIL ONLY to 225.999.1132 is required. *EMAILS OR OTHER MEDIUMS ARE NOT ACCEPTED AS PROPER NOTICE.*

Should you cancel or reschedule less than 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment, your card will be charged 100% of all services scheduled, minus any paid reservation fee. Once your appointment is requested, reservation fees become NON REFUNDABLE, but may be transferred to another date two (2) times before being forfeited, should the transfer occur before the 48-hour window. Reservation fees are not transferrable to another person.

Should you not show for your appointment, 100% of all scheduled services will be charged to your card and future appointments will not be welcome.

**Please DO NOT send a cancellation message through the booking system, email or Instagram.** These messages are not always received. Should that happen, another client would not be able to fill the vacant spot, and the appropriate cancellation fees will apply.

Q: What is your cancellation standard?

A: Eric only works with natural curls, and does not do any perming services on curly hair. Permed hair does not behave or respond the same as natural curls. One common misconception is that perming curly hair will better control frizz. This isn’t true. Hydration in your natural curls will control frizz. This would all be demonstrated in the Curl Sculpting Services.

Q: Do you do perms or Curl Sculpting Cuts on permed hair?

A: Things happen! Sometimes you just can't avoid running late. If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, some or all of your services will need to be rescheduled. However, the fee for those services will still remain. It would be unfair to the next guest to make them wait, considering the possibility that they may have another appointment following their salon appointment.

Q: What happens if I am running late for my appointment?
